On track for largest smart ticketing scheme outside of London

18 December 2014

More than 500,000 people across Greater Manchester are now able to get on board with smart ticketing as a part of the phased rollout of the get me there scheme.

Everybody holding a Greater Manchester concessionary pass for older or disabled people is now being asked to touch in and touch out at the system’s smart readers whenever they travel for free, following a successful pilot run by Transport for Greater Manchester.

ACT has been working with TfGM to implement the smart ticketing back office and infrastructure that will deliver the UK’s largest smart ticketing programme outside of London.

Card holders will be able to register their passes online and view their travel history whenever they like through the get me there website.

Future-proof infrastructure

ACT has created the ticketing back-office infrastructure that can deal with very high levels of users and transactions. Importantly, the ticketing back office has been built with future demands at its heart and as TfGM continue to roll out its smart ticketing programme, it has the scale and capacity to meet the demands of this comprehensive smart ticketing programme.

Gary Watts, CEO, ACT commented: “We are delighted with the success of the first stage of TfGM’s smart ticketing programme. Our smart ticketing platform underpins many of the country’s largest ticketing schemes and TfGM needed a solution with the capacity demanded for such a large-scale programme.

As the adoption of smart ticketing continues at pace, ACT has the systems to help introduce new schemes across all modes of transport. Our clients benefit from not only the core ticketing systems necessary to go smart, but just as importantly, they gain from the security of ACT’s hosting infrastructure which was built to process massive amounts of transactions, 24/7.”

Over the next 12 months ACT will be supporting the further roll out of the programme on Metrolink to include season, point to point and pay-as-you-go ticket types. When fully deployed, the aim is for get me there to allow travel seamlessly across bus, tram, and rail services in the Greater Manchester area.

Programme roll out

Get me there will be extended to fare-paying Metrolink customers during 2015.

Chair of the TfGM Committee, Councillor Andrew Fender, said: “We have successfully begun the introduction of get me there and this latest step marks a significant milestone in creating an easy and seamless way of paying for and using public transport across Greater Manchester.”
